Returning after their summer break, the Merseyside Conservative Ladies Luncheon Club were delighted to welcome Dr David Jeffery as their guest speaker, while beginning the season with a new venue at The Liner Hotel in Liverpool.
David was born and raised in Liverpool, and was educated at The Liverpool Bluecoat School before leaving the city to study politics for his undergraduate and Master’s degrees at the University of Sheffield, and finally his PhD at Queen Mary University of London. He is now a senior lecturer at the University of Liverpool and also Chairman of the City of Liverpool Conservatives.
David engaged the luncheon with his ideas for encouraging younger electors to vote Conservative, his experiences with his students and their own political views, the issues Liverpool faces under Labour rule, and his own research on the decline of the Conservative Party locally in the city, including his book “Whatever Happened to Tory Liverpool?” (which can be ordered here, or read online for free: https://www.liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/doi/book/10.3828/9781802078480)
He answered questions about, among other things the current state of politics, his process for separating his own political beliefs from his impartiality as a lecturer and commentator in media appearances, and that week’s Party Conference.
The next luncheon will be held on Friday 3rd November 2023. More information and booking can be made via Alma McGing on: almamcging@blueyonder.co.uk.
